THE ANIRIDIA PAGE
ANIRIDIA DESCRIPTION
DR. ROSENTHAL WAS THE WORLD'S FIRST SURGEON TO IMPLANT THE MORCHER IRIS DIAPHRAGM RING. This ring is the first modular designed intraocular implant designed to replace the eye's natural iris. It is used in patients who are missing the iris, either through congenital (inherited) defect, or through injury. The device is often implanted in conjunction with cataract surgery and has been sucessful in improving or restoring vision to many patients worldwide who suffer from this condition. Dr. Rosenthal co-invented this device along with Dr. Volker Rasch, of Potsdam, Germany.

He was awarded a Video Competition Award at the 1997 meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Boston, Massachusets for his original video presentation about this first insertion. The video, entitled: "Phacotrabeculectomy and Insertion of a Morcher Iris Diaphragm Ring in a Patient With the Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome," was produced and edited entirely by

Dr. Rosenthal and shows his original surgical technique for two new innovations: The insertion of the Iris Diaphragm Ring and an innovated approach to performing glaucoma surgery without the use of stitches. It has been shown at meetings in Europe, Africa, and South America as well.

The patients shown in this video presentation has continued to do well, having recently undergone further surgery because of his very severe glaucoma and corneal problems.

The video can be downloaded below or you can view the slide presentation (or both!), by clicking on the appropriate icon.

The video presentation is in .zip format which will decompress to .avi format and is 4.2 megabites in size.

So be sure to leave a lot of download time. This may take upwards of 1/2 hour at 28.8K! Also, these presentations are intended for an audience of eye care professionals so there is a fair amount of medical terminology, but of course the interested public is more than welcome to view it. If you wish to obtain a full VHS videotape version of the award-winning video presentation, please contact the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) at http://www.escrs.ie/educ/vide/vide1.html at a cost of $25.-- US.
